This summer in the Town of Valdese, a 2014 Super Glide Custom Harley Davidson bike will be given away to a lucky winner through the Wheels for BCACD fundraiser. On Friday, June 13, 2014 people are invited to attend Family Friday Night on Main Street in Valdese to enjoy music by the Fantastic Shakers and the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets at $5. This bike, as described by Top Speed has a “custom cruiser style, low slung stature and relaxed riding position,” and “continues to be one of the most wanted motorcycles in its class.” The bike is valued $14,000. Proceeds from the Super Glide raffle, Wheels for BCACD, will benefit Burke Council on Alcoholism & Chemical Dependency (BCACD), providing education/prevention, treatment and recovery support services to all citizens of Burke County, regardless of their ability to pay.
I am an addict – drugs, alcohol, pretty much anything with the potential to get addicted to. I didn’t grow up wanting or even thinking that my life would go the way it has, and I definitely didn’t want to be a drug addict when I grew up. Life happens, and it happened very painfully for me. After being sexually abused in childhood, and then stuck in what seemed an inescapable period of sexual abuse by a family member, I turned to drinking and drugs. I used to make life livable enough not to kill myself – I had family and friends I loved and did not want to hurt, but the pain was too great. I started drinking at 10 and by the time I was in high school, I was a full-blown drug addict, and I knew it. It was the only life I knew and then only way the pain didn’t overcome me.
It was the perfect crisp, cool Autumn day for the Peak to Creek Marathon!
